License For Use of CASE® Frameworks with Restrictions on Redistribution

This license enables consumers of this CASE framework (Framework Consumers) to use the Framework Data under the terms below. By accessing or using the Framework Data, the Consumer agrees to these terms.

1) Definitions

2) Permitted Uses

Subject to Section 3, Framework Consumers may:

  1. Display in Applications: Use and display the Framework Data in Consumer’s educational products and services for end users (educators, students, etc.).
  2. Process Internally: Store, cache, index, and transform the Framework Data as needed for Consumer’s own applications.
  3. Create & Share Alignments: Create, use, publish, and transmit Alignment Metadata, including inclusion of CASE identifiers, codes, URIs, statements, and any other fields reasonably necessary to unambiguously reference the aligned standards.

3) Prohibited Activities

Framework Consumers may not, without express prior written consent from the Framework Publisher:

  1. Redistribute or Publish the Standards: Redistribute, publish, or otherwise provide access to the Framework Data (in whole or substantial part) to any third party where the primary purpose is to provide the Framework Data itself as a dataset or service.
  2. No Public Mirrors: Upload or mirror the Framework Data (original or transformed) to public repositories or services (e.g., Git/GitHub, public S3 buckets, public APIs) where third parties can bulk access the standards.
  3. No Sublicensing: Sublicense, resell, or otherwise grant third parties access to the Framework Data as a dataset.

No Workarounds via Transformation: This prohibition includes transforming the Framework, by converting it to another format (e.g., CSV, XML, proprietary schema) or by removing or inserting additional metadata, and then publishing or distributing that transformed dataset as the standards themselves.

Clarification (incidental inclusion allowed): As described in the previous Section, inclusion of standards identifiers, codes, URIs, statements, and any other data within alignment metadata or user-facing displays in your application is permitted, provided such inclusion does not constitute not a substitute for distributing the Framework Data as a dataset.

4) Rule of Thumb for Usage

As a general rule of thumb, as long as you are not redistributing the Framework Data for use by other entities, you are free to use the data in any way you wish within your own application or service. If you wish to redistribute Framework Data, you must first obtain permission from the Framework Publisher. For every Framework, the Publisher should be specified in the CFDocument.publisher field of the CASE JSON.
